Dazzle

Dearest Third Cousin,

Pink can be quite an intimidating colour but this editorial featuring Harriet Verney, niece of the one and only Isabella Blow, really caught my imagination. The use of colour in this shoot got me thinking about all the beautiful hologram and mermaid-esque photos I've been hoarding over the past few weeks. Silver, blue/green sequins and hologram are the perfect adornment to any outfit, I really love this kind of dazzle dressed down over a pair of boyfriend jeans, under a leather jacket or with a plain t-shirt.

While Rihanna is doing the hologram trend so right above, so is this remix of Stay. It's been on repeat while putting this post together and it just feels so right for this trend.

White Leather

Dearest Third Cousin,

White leather is just so great, it feels really fresh and its such a nice change from black. If your on the hunt ebay is your friend, there are some stunning and quite affordable items on there. I may be purchasing a cropped white leather jacket very soon.

Bling Ring

Dearest Third Cousin,

Not too much to say, I just love these images from this Dazed Digital shoot featuring some of the cast members of the Sofia Coppola's new movie The Bling Ring. How great is the styling? I would wear everything head to toe and be a very happy chicken. If you have a chance you should read Nancy Jo Sales Vanity Fair article about the 'Bling Ring' burglaries, I promise you its worth the time, here's the link.

Polaroids

Dearest Third Cousin,

Over the past four years, photographer Robert Oades has been taking Polaroids of the models he works with. These 'model off duty' images reveal a little bit of each models personality, he asked each subject to sign their photos. From quotes like 'smoking kills' and 'mines a jack and coke' to a simple signature these shots show Oades' eye for a great image and which models couldn't resist having some fun with the opportunity. Have a look at Rianne Ten Haken in particular 'it ain't much if it ain't Dutch'.

The Origins of Monsters

Dearest Third Cousin,

The Origins of Monsters is one of my all time favourite editorials. Tim Walker, Katie Grand and Kirsten McMenamy team up to create these fantastical images for Love#7. The tense atmosphere coupled with Kirsten's high priestess look makes for a romantic but disturbing glimpse into a magical, other world. McMenamy takes control of this world, helped by Grand's always pitch perfect styling and Walker's signature over the top staging.

Frida Kahlo Music and Fashion muse.

The above collage feels like one of those "spot the difference" games such is the directness of the inspiration. However it is stunning.  Frida Kahlo is one of my favorite visual artists and this shoot captures the essence of her style and leaves you feeling that if she was around today that this what her street style snapshot would look like.

Sorry I couldn't resist putting in some of the full size images, especially after I read Tobacco and Leather's comparison of these images to Lana Del Ray. I have to say I found this very interesting not just because of the obvious mutual appreciation of a floral head piece but because of the mutual themes of pain, anguish and melancholy in they're respective work. I can imagine Kahlo listening to Del Ray and frankly that is probably one of the biggest compliments I can give her music which for the record (sorry I couldn't resist) has been caressing my ears all Christmas!

"I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."
-Frida Kahlo

Happy New Year,
Sarah
