Frida Kahlo Music and Fashion muse.

The above collage feels like one of those "spot the difference" games such is the directness of the inspiration. However it is stunning. Frida Kahlo is one of my favorite visual artists and this shoot captures the essence of her style and leaves you feeling that if she was around today that this what her street style snapshot would look like.

Sorry I couldn't resist putting in some of the full size images, especially after I read Tobacco and Leather's comparison of these images to Lana Del Ray. I have to say I found this very interesting not just because of the obvious mutual appreciation of a floral head piece but because of the mutual themes of pain, anguish and melancholy in they're respective work. I can imagine Kahlo listening to Del Ray and frankly that is probably one of the biggest compliments I can give her music which for the record (sorry I couldn't resist) has been caressing my ears all Christmas!

A fresh start!

The past few months have been an adventure and an exploration of my personal preferences and style. I've changed, experimented and realised a little bit more of my personality. A lot of things have changed and many of the really excited opportunities that have come my way this year have been as a result of this embarrassingly neglected blog of mine!

So here's to a fresh start and an overhaul of my third cousin. The poor girl needs some love so its time for some serious TLC and a make over.

Dearest Third Cousin,

Its been far too long. Some exciting things have been happening since we last spoke. I've been appointed the fashion editor for Motley magazine. It the UCC mag and I couldn't be happier/excited/terrified about it.

Secondly I'm just back from Amsterdam and I had an amazing time trawling the lovely vintage and independent shops.

Thirdly Tralee Babytag have opened a studio/Gallery space in Tralee and we have a exhibit in Roundy's Bar this Thursday at 7. Pop along if you can!

Also I'm working full time for the Summer so I'm afraid posts my be sporadic. Hope your Summer is going well!

Also I passed my exams so final year here I come. I'm delighted :D.

I have been wanting to try out the colour blocking trend for a while and I have to say I like it. Dearest Third Cousin,

Heres a little Preview of a post I put together for Garnish with the bizarre. If you haven't already checked out their blog do it, you won't regret it I promise. These ladies have caught the travel bug and there blog is a mix of amazing photos, friendship adventures and everything that is worth blogging about! I'm hooked.

In other news the wisdom teeth are gone and I'm left bored senseless at home. I am surprised at the lack of pain I'm experiencing however the swelling is making up for this. I'm happy to rid of the pesky teeth and on the road to eating solid food again. Hurray!

The quest part one.

Dearest Third Cousin,

This is the tale of two bloggers quest for "the" outfit shot. While our journey is far from over we have made many advances in out battle against unflattering poses and dodgy lighting.

1. Casually bend your knee whilst leaning against strategically graffitied wall.

2. Praise the wall. After all it has just made you look really cool.

3. Put on an "I am deep in thought" face and pretend the camera isn't there. It a great way to show off your new nail colour.

While the lessons above have been learned the hard way. I shall leave you with this advice if all else fails hand your camera to the first person who offers and pose with a friend for them. The quest continues but if last night proved anything it was that "the" outfit shot will be a lot of fun to find.

10 Things

1. Technology hates me. It's really is a bother when I want to blog.

2. My mom recently asked me "so Sarah what's a blog?". She still hasn't quiet gasped it. I now know where my technological problems stem from.

3. I try my best to buy vintage or clothing from local shops.

4. My efforts aren't always successful.

5. My best friend Ais is coming home from Luton on Saturday and I'm very excitied!

6.I'm studying Art history and History in UCC.I'm originally from Kerry, Tralee to be exact!

7. I only realised how much I love getting dressed when a former music teacher told me that I was one of two students she thought had a "way of putting an outfit together."

8. I owe this music teacher a lot, she was so encouraging and I really must thank her properly.

9. Needless to say the realisation mentioned above led to this blog and aspirations to pursue a career in fashion/media styling.

10. However I do believe that life has a way of working things out so that career mentioned in no.9 may turn into something completely different and unexpected I tend to go with the flow and it has worked out really well for me so far!

Surreal Inspiration

Dearest Third Cousin,

Her Innovations are some of the most recognised fashion statements ever made. Her colour is adored by millions. Her Anti-Fashion clothing is a sartorial god send. Her designs embody sex and death. She is the quirky mother of the Avant Garde. She is the ever influential Elsa Schiaparelli.

The jumpsuit, shocking pink, synthetic fabrics, Skelton and lobster dresses. Schiap collaborated with the surrealist art movement by designing Fashion that embraced and realised their Freudian values. Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau both contributed to her dresses and Coco Chanel was her sworn enemy. Her life was almost as colourful and intriguing as her deigns.

In 1927 Schiap made her breakthrough with a handmade jumper that incorporated the illusion of a bow tie neck line. The hand production of the jumper opposed the mechanical manufacturing that was taken place in the 20’s.It also aligned her designs with the surreal movement and incorporated their sense of illusion and wonder. The jumper was the “the must have item” of the late 20’s. Schiap took the unusual step of hiring women to hand make her jumpers to meet the demand. In an age where this could have been done by machine Schiap wanted to stand out from the crowd, a crowd which included Coco Chanel.

While Coco embraced menswear inspired designs many of Schiap’s designs incorporated exaggerated shoulders and emphases on the waist. This classic feminine silhouette was modernised with many surreal innovations. One of her most striking designs is her Skelton dress. This dress plays with surrealist preoccupation with death. The skin tight dress has protruding skeletal figures. The rib cage is on show and the entire body is encased in black fabric. The dress seems to mimic death, once you try it on it will never come off! Despite the famous Skelton dress Schiap is much better known for embracing humour and fun in her designs.

A lot of the fun her clothes integrate stems from her choice of fabric. She was pioneering in this sense. She used man-made fabrics that nobody else dared to. One such piece made use of cellophane like fabric that gave the illusion of glass, juxtaposing hard and soft and undoubtedly seducing the customer with this illusion.

Her play on sex did not end with seducing the customer. She produced clothing that emphasised the zipper. A black dress was made novel and sexual by adding a contrasting coloured zip. The zip was the gateway to flesh. The customer of the post war era lapped this up and embraced the novelties that were thrown at them by Schiap.

Some of her most famous designs were the result of her collaboration with Salvador Dali, the infamously sexual lobster dress for example. The lobster was used to represent female sexuality and it position on the dress could be described as compromising to say the least! The tail of the pink and fully cooked crustacean covers the crotch. This feature makes what could be a very ordinary dress something extraordinary and surreal.

Another collaboration with Dali, the Tear Dress evokes violence. The tears appear to be rips on the dress. The visual attack of rips and tears is quite shocking and disturbing for the viewer. The beauty of the dress is outweighed by the heavy double meaning it portrays. It’s quite a contrast to the playful sexuality of the lobster.

Buttons and hats played an important role in her work. One of my favourite designs is a shocking pink jacket with buttons that look like insects. The piece incorporates what I love most about her work, the sense of fun that something special, even if it’s a bit grotesque.

Her famous shoe hat was another collaboration with Dali. The idea of putting a shoe on your head was novel, fun and Surreal. The novelty hat was something that Karl Lagerfeld exploited in the 80’s he designed Pastry hats and an intriguing Chair Hat. It does make you wonder what Coco would have had to say about the Chanel designers foray into the world of the surreal.

Her influence should not be underestimated and has been cited by many designers, Yves San Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Mc Queen and Thierry Mugler. Schiaps designs challenged the viewer to look. This I feel is what any great artist should do. Her work is a visual feast filled with layers of violence, death and sex. The surreal movement gave Schiap an endless database of inspiration but it was her imagination and fearless originality that is her legacy.

Everything BabyTag

Dearest Third Cousin,

As you know I have been involved with BabyTag for a while now and I have taken the plunge. I have decided to exhibit. Our First Exhibition will take place over the Easter Weekend. In a unused Business premises in Tralee. We have decided to bring art (or what out idea of contemporary art is) out of the traditional gallery space and into a more relaxed arena.

Now I do not consider myself an artist, anyone who has seen my attempts at using traditional mediums will testify to this. However BabyTag is not exclusively about traditional art. My piece that I hope to show over the weekend will be based around my blogging experience. The idea is to bring My Third Cousin into the exhibit. There will be three outfit photos on display and an opportunity for the viewer to comment on the post.

The piece will simply be three outfits and a notebook for the viewer to write their comment in. I wrote an artist’s statement for the piece so here it is. It might explain things a bit better.

“This piece is inspired by my blogging experience over the past 5 months. I invite you to comment on my photos and to have fun with it. Engage in the voyeurism that is part of the fashion blog experience. Take the opportunity to share your thoughts on the real life wardrobe of My Third Cousin. The alter ego and sartorial mistress who inspired the outfits you see.”

We are having this Exhibition in conjunction with ‘ JIGSAW KERRY’ a charity set up to support the mental health and wellbeing needs of young people aged between 12years and 25 years. Considering the pressures faced by young people here in Kerry and and Ireland we all as a group fully support this worthwhile charity. SO INSUPPORT WE ARE NOT SELLING THE ART WORKS IN OUR EXHIBITION OVER THE 3 DAYS, INSTEAD WE ARE OFFERING THEM TO THE PUBLIC FOR FREE!!!! Yes U read right? This will be done in a RAFFLE SYNARIO with all donations going to ‘JIGSAW’

This white lace top has been a companion for a few years and I always break it out of hibernation around this time every year. I can safely say it is one of my favorite items of clothing. It so versatile and makes me feel like summer is within sight. What I've been up to during my blogging hiatus

In other news a post about my travels in Italy is looming as soon as I get my camera to co-operate. There have been some very exciting conversations with Cathy from Turquoise Flamingo involving decade themed fun and outfit opportunities. Finally Baby TAG (Tralee Art Group) is an in artistic and creative endeavor that I am looking forward to being involved in. It had been described as a platform for creative people to let their creativity out! Baby TAG is embracing blogging along with art, design, fashion and anything else creative you can begin to think of. It basically an open sphere for anyone to get a bit arty. Well so long as your over 16.

Turquoise Flamingo Corks newest vintage boutique had its official launch yesterday (Thursday the 3th). This little shop on Washington St (the old Plugd) is a GEM. The stock as you can see from the photos above is eclectic, varied and oh so desirable. I can say beyond any doubt I am coveting more than a few items. There really is something for everyone and importantly with vintage every size. The brains behind the operation Cathy is without fail one of the nicest and innovative shop owners in town. She is brimming with ideas for fun in-store nights, that I'm very excited about .I love that she wants the shop to be a place where people can hang out and enjoy themselves! The night was a great success with the shop packed, the champagne flowing, the cupcakes steadily vanishing and the music live! I will be back to snap up some beautiful garments asap.

Ps. You may remember I bought a fabulous black turban from Turquoise Flamingo a few weeks ago. Well I'm very sad to report it got stolen on a night out, that turban may be no more but now I have room in my wardrobe for some of the beautiful head wear featured above!

I just Bought a TURBAN in Turquoise Flamingo a fabulously well stocked vintage shop in cork that just opened. I am very excited about this as I have been looking for one for ages. Recently I have been having a love affair with trousers and longer length skirts and dresses. These red H&M leather Trousers have me blissfully recalling Isabel Marant and are defiantly on my wish list.

The Topshop Unqiue SS/11 show is where I fell in love with the sheer shirt dress above. I hope to purchase it and wear it with a slip peeking out under the thigh high slit.

St. Stephens night was lots of fun. However the rain got in the way.I originally wanted to wear socks with these shoes but they would have got destroyed. I bought these trousers in Penneys recently and absolutely love them and for only 13 euro they were quite the steal.

A Catch up

The Exams are over and now the fun can begin YAHOOO!Heres a little gilmse in to the life of a post exam time college students life.

I had the chance to see Villagers in the Savoy(Cork) on Wednesday night. It was my frist Villagers gig and after a Summer of listening to Conor O'Brien's magical music, the live performance blew me away. It was amazing. I have never been at a gig where the entire crowd was plunged into stunned silence by the first chord. You could hear a pin drop. A great night with two great friends accompanied by a stunning soundtrack.

Tonight is my work party. The cold snap has returned with a vengeance so layers shall be worn. Outfit post to follow tomorrow.

Also the Return of my favourite immigrant friend is approaching; let’s just say the snowflakes will turn ginger as soon as she lands in Kerry Airport. Weather permitting ekk! Hope everyone gets home safe and on time grrr pesky weather.

My head has been filled with thoughts of elegance and my idea of the perfect formal attire.

Firstly the dress, I love the easy glamour provided by the images below. Any of these would make me happy beyond words. The dress must be Burgundy though.

While dreaming up this outfit a cold snap hit and to keep my brain from freezing over I added a coat. This coat has Fur (faux but real looking) details and fits like it was made for you because it was. How else would my third cousin keep warm on her way to the ball.

In my head this would be the perfect outfit for wandering around a Parisian street while snow is falling and light is turning into dark.

Why did you create your blog?

Sarah: I was playing with the idea of starting a blog for such a long time but could never come up with a name.I also wanted something a little bit different from other blogs I had been reading. When I got back in contact with my third cousin at a family reunion and we discovered our mutual interest in fashion the name and idea for the blog just struck me!

Third Cousin: Whatever she says don’t believe her it was all me, I am the mastermind behind this. Ha Sarah is that even your real name she lies........alot.

What kind of blogs do you follow?

Sarah: Its mainly fashion blogs, however I do regularly read beauty and personal blogs. I love blogs where the blogger gets across their unique point of view and style, whether that is by using pictures or text. Basically I love blogs that are true to the person behind them and have a distinct voice. Also celebrity blogs are a guilty pleasure. Hello Perez.

Third Cousin: I love Perez “Sarah”. I like looking at blogs that feature people with fabulous wardrobes. Facehunter and the Clothes Horse are Favourites.

Sarah: uhh good choices, I really can’t narrow it down so I won’t name names.

Favourite make-up brand?

Sarah: ahhh good question...let me think

Third Cousin: Mac.

Sarah: Rimmel liquid eyeliner and Mac eyebrow pencil everything else I switch around.

Favourite clothing brand?

Sarah: Most of what I have bought in the past year has been vintage or from little independent shops. On the high street Topshop and H&M have been favourites lately. Designer Labels: Rodarte, Vivienne Westwood and Prada. I really do love women designers.

Third Cousin: I have to confess I’m not that into vintage, I love American Apparel and Zara. Designer stuff: Chanel and Alexander Wang.

Imaginary Outfit..#1

Dearest Third Cousin,

As you are aware I have been creating outfits in my head and placing myself in imaginary situations wearing them for many years now. I believe I may have first confessed this when we were still watching the Care Bears together.

Unfortunately I rarely find what I have dreamt up before I move onto my next dream. So I have decided to take note and actually document what it is I am wearing in my mind, but my eyes can't seem to find in the shops. Often the outfit may be inspired by a single item I see and I style it my way. My mental wardrobe is free, no money needed and only restricted by my imagination therefore its the direct opposite of my physical clothes housing thing. This little game I play in my head, of what to wear and in what situation is honestly one of my favourite past times.

So explanation over , the following is an example:

Most recently I have been pining over a camel jumper (fine knit)*, a shirt (cream) to go underneath with a vintage feel collar that will peek over the neck of the jumper, with some high waisted shorts made from an interesting fabric like a silk/satin mix so as to have some structure but not too much (black preferably) accompanied by some black 60ish denier tights and a chunky heeled ankle boot (black suede) and this bag which is hopefully an xmas present!

In my dream I am wearing this outfit to the greatest party in the world which is being hosted by the perfect imaginary man . He is tall dark handsome etc era you know the type. I am at my witty best and my hair and makeup stay in place all night, a kiss and exchange of numbers is involved. Its pretty much fairytale and that my cousin is the beauty of imagination. The night will go down as one for the ages and we live happily ever after in a castle by a lake.

*I may have found this in Topshop hurray but due to my poverty I may never own it :(. I will let you know how the situation progresses.

Dress up dream # 4

Dearest Third Cousin,

I've stumbled upon these photos of the one and only James Franco posing for Candy magazine shot by Terry Richardson.They have really got me thinking about androgyny and masculine/feminine dressing.

Both Franco and Richardson are known for pushing boundaries in their respected fields and I love how androgynous dressing pushes gender boundaries. The feeling I get from these photos its the same feeling I get when I button up a shirt the entire way or wear any typical masculine piece of clothing, its a lot of fun and quiet a daring look that often lets a second glance or two. Its one that does require a certain attitude and a nice bit of confidence.

I love the play on gender all these ladies are showcasing. Each image shows a diferent repsonse and variation on a theme. I love how a subtle detail can transform an outfit and while franco is quiet literal in his response I think a single masculine item can transform the aesthetic of an outfit and the mind of the person wearing it.

I know you asked my opinion on which I prefer but frankly I do not like either. I had to ask myself if I would purchase either pair and I couldn't bring myself to say yes. My lack of enthusiasm for these shoes I can only justify by saying they just aren't for me, which i find strange I like the idea of them and I am a leopard
print lover.I am also lusting after a pair of black wedeged ankle boots my dreams ones being the Acne Hybria Lea(however i do not have 430 euro to spend):

Perhaps I am just a shoe lover who is stuck in a fantasy with a pair of boots I shall never realistically own but alas my third cousin the River Island boots just do not do it for me!However R.I is still a shoe haven with many other styles I do adore and may actually get a chance to own. Infact many of my favorite and long suffering shoes have been from River Island so I do think you should purhase which ever pair you decide you like best.

Ps: at least you won't have to worry about me borrowing them!

An Explanation..(introduction)

My third Cousin was an idea born out of a series of intellectual meetings (please read this as night outs which may or may not have involved a drink or two).These meetings produced an idea for a blog which aims to offer a quirky and interesting debate on fashion mainly ,with some art and music added to the mix from time to time.The twist however is many posts will be in response to "my third cousin" ,she really is an opinionated character. We agree most of the time however lively discussions about the topics mentioned above will ensue. This will be a sartorial war of sorts which i hope you enjoy reading about.
